E3 2017 wrapped on June 15th and this episode focuses on the Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, and EA press conferences. Sony kept a very game-centric show; Opting to minimize speakers on stage and emphasize their games. Among which were some big fan-favorite titles like the next Uncharted. Nintendo brought a line-up of the usual suspects including a new Mario title, some Zelda DLC and much more. Ubisoft came in determined to win the trophy for the most awkward press conference with their reveal of a Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Along with that was a lot of info on big franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and more. EA came in with a huge display of Star Wars Battlefront 2, Anthem, Madden, and their usual franchises.

In non-E3 related news, we got the incredibly disappointing bit of news that Mass Effect: Andromeda will not be receiving any single player DLC. However, it will continue to receive multiplayer DLC and patches/updates. This appears to be Bioware’s reaction the the overblown criticism of the game and its issues at launch. A good DLC could’ve undone a good amount of negative perception, but it appears we won’t get that chance; The franchise is seemingly on the shelf for the foreseeable future. Important note: This came out through news media and there hasn’t been an official announcement from the company to date.

What’s Inside

  • Sony E3 2017: Sony came into E3 with a different approach than we are typically used to. They decided to put an emphasis on games displayed and added a minimal amount of speakers on stage. The event came in guns blazing with the next game in the uncharted series titles Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Shortly thereafter we got a long look at the next God Of War game that will feature both Kratos and his son doing what they do best. Building on last year they added a number of titles that will be playable on PSVR (list below). There was a long look of their upcoming zombie title Days Gone, a Horizon Zero Dawn expansion, a Shadow of the Colossus remake and much more.
We were treated to a long look of the multiplayer component to Call of Duty: World War II. Overall the series appears to be going back to its roots; The multiplayer looks notably more approachable by players of all skill, rather than the ultra-twitchy nature the series has had in recent years. Also a pleasant surprise in the graphics looking better than expected.
Notably missing was an expected/anticipated follow-up to the insanely popular The Last Of Us. Instead of ending on that, we got a finale of a comparably underwhelming Spider-Man title.

  • Nintendo E3 2017: Nintendo had the surprising announcement of Metroid Prime 4, which has been a long time coming. Other than that they had their usual offering of their staple games starting with the next iteration of Mario in Super Mario Odyssey; As well as Kirby, Yoshi, and Pokémon RPG announcements.  There were multiple DLC announcements for the well received Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And Rocket League is making it’s way to the Switch, and as we discussed on our last show, will eventually break the boundaries of cross console play.

  • Ubisoft E3 2017: Ubisoft seemingly went out of their way to make their event as awkward as possible with the announcement of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle while play fighting with fake Mario guns onstage. However, they did redeem themselves with extended looks at the beautiful Assassin’s Creed Origins, and Far Cry 5. If you’re a fan of crude comedy like I am, the trailer of South Park: The Fractured But Whole showed that it will scratch that itch. Skull & Bones looks like a pirating games plucked (plundered?) right out of Assasin’s Creed Black Flag, and looks to be a ton of fun, scurvy and all. And finally Beyond Good & Evil 2  was announced after an incredibly long wait, to the joy of fans everywhere.

  • EA E3 2017: EA gave us a long look at Star Wars: Battlefront II which looks to have made a lot of improvements on the good, but somewhat hollow, Battlefront I. The gameplay had the feel of being much more approachable, along with some welcome tweaks like making it easier to earn a hero. We all need a lightsaber sometimes, right? Along with their Madden 18 announcement was that of the Longshot game play mode. Longshot is their latest attempt at the never-been-done-well-before sports game story mode. Need for Speed Payback looks like it was made while the crew watched the Fast and Furious movies daily, which is a good thing in this case, because it looks like a ton of fun. When in doubt, add more explosions, trust in Michael Bay.
