Surprising almost no one for many reasons, EA officially announced Star Wars: Battlefront 2 at the Star Wars Celebration today. We knew the game was on the way after the trailer leaked earlier in the week. But, really, even without the leak did you expect EA to not create another entry? Our thoughts after the trailer.

Battlefront 2 aims to address one of the biggest complaints from first Battlefront: the lack of a single-player campaign. The story appears to follow the leader of an Imperial special forces unit, Inferno Squad, just after the destruction of the second Death Star. She appears to be leading her squad as part of the Imperial remnant that would eventually become the First Order. Bets on if she actually stays with the Empire by the end?

We also get shots of what we presume to be some of the multi-player chaos that’s a bit more familiar. It doesn’t seem to be straying too far from its Battlefield roots with a mix of infantry and vehicular combat. Again we’ll see heroes from the Star Wars universe duke it out with Yoda, Darth Maul, Rey, and Kylo Ren confirmed. Finally, it’s powered by Frostbite so it of course looks gorgeous.

No release date was given but it’s fair to assume it’ll be out this fall to tap into the The Last Jedi hype.

Update: EA announced that Battlefront 2 will be released on November 17 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. In addition, it appears that they’ll no longer be offering a “season pass.” No details on what will be replacing it. Finally, local co-op will be an exclusive feature to Xbox One which is…interesting.
